The President of Mayors for Peace European Chapter, Mayor Alba Barnusell, participated at the regional consultation, which took place last May 30 in Basel, Switzerland.

This regional consultation included representatives of government (local and national), civil society organizations and youth from the ‘three country region’ connecting Germany, France and Switzerland (with Basel at the centre). Each of these countries has important roles in the UN Summit of the Future and related initiatives including the UN New Agenda for Peace and the current case in the International Court of Justice on the RObligations of States with Regard to Climate Change.

The roundtable event tackled the issue of Peace, Climate Protection and the UN Summit of the Future: The roles of cities and youth. Mayor Alba Barnusell explined that “Cities must be awared and address the three types of violence when it comes to raising public political issues: direct, structural and cultural violence and that it is important to promote and practice citizen participation, transparency, good governance, fostering alliances in order to build shared projects. Streghtening and taking care of democracy”. She added that “Accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a fundamental condition for raising the challenges that the New Agenda for Peace proposes.”
